Knee replacement surgery might make you feel uneasy, so it helps to know what you might expect before, during and after this type of procedure.
What to expect before knee replacement surgery
Every knee replacement we perform begins with a professional consultation with our team at Carolinas Center for Surgery. Our knee replacement surgeons will examine your knee to confirm your need for a replacement, discuss the procedure with you and answer any questions you may have.
Your orthopedic surgeon will also use this opportunity to discuss your current diet and medications and make any recommended changes to put you in the best position for a healthy and successful surgery and recovery.
What to expect during knee replacement surgery
You will be given anesthesia so you do not feel anything during the procedure along with an intravenous antibiotic to stave off infection.
An incision between six and 10 inches will be made in your knee and the orthopedic surgeon will then move your kneecap out of the way, cut away the damaged joint surfaces, attach the artificial joint and close the incision.
You can expect your knee replacement surgery to last around two hours.
What to expect after knee replacement surgery
Once the procedure is done, you will be moved to a recovery room. Some patients are able to return home the same day as the surgery, but each case is different.
You will be prescribed some pain medication to alleviate discomfort over the coming days and weeks and may be prescribed some blood thinners as well. You also may be instructed to wear a compression brace or boot to control swelling and clotting.
A doctor will teach you some simple exercises you may do at home to help strengthen your leg and you may be recommended to perform outpatient physical therapy as part of the recovery process.
Many daily activities can be resumed in three to six weeks and your level of exercise and activity can gradually ramp up as your recovery continues. Our team will guide you through this process and help you better understand your limitations.
