Dr. Gary Wertman is a graduate of Penn State University and Philadelphia College of Medicine. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery training in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He practiced for a short time in eastern North Carolina, but quickly realized the communities need for a fellowship trained Upper Extremity Surgeon. Subsequently, he completed an Upper Extremity Fellowship at the OrthoCarolina Hand Center in Charlotte, NC where he specialized in Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microvascular surgery.  During his fellowship training, he had the unique opportunity of using sports medicine to treat a variety of upper extremity injuries in professional athletes within the greater Charlotte area.

Dr. Wertman has a broad range of orthopedic knowledge with a special area of interest in upper extremity conditions involving the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder including arthritis, fracture care, sports/work-related injuries, nerve compression syndromes, traumatic reconstructions, and congenital abnormalities. He is dedicated to the team approach to patient care, involving the orthopedic surgeon, occupational therapists, physicians, and the patient’s family to coordinate a smooth recovery and return to normal activity.

Dr. Wertman is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery with a subspecialty in Hand/Upper Extremity Surgery. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO), American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).

Dr. Wertman is active in the community including local high school sports and community service projects. He enjoys the mild climate of Jacksonville and Morehead City, North Carolina, and enjoys entertaining his wife and family on the waters of the crystal coast.
